Three Steps To Spring

If you live in the Northeast, you know this has not been an easy winter. This year especially felt endless, as we were hit with an enormous amount of snow that seemed relentless. If you know me, you know that I'm a spring girl looking for that first hint of hope as the days get even just a touch longer, and now we're here, spring has arrived, and I could not be more excited.

I know it sounds a bit strange, but I actually look forward to spring cleaning. However, it's not the cleaning I enjoy, but the feeling that comes over me afterwards when I stand back, and my space feels airy and refreshed. If you're ready to do the same, the good news is that getting your space ready for spring doesn’t require a full redesign or a cleaning crew. A few intentional, affordable changes can instantly reset your home so you enjoy a lighter, brighter home all season long.

Here are 5 simple, actionable steps to welcome the new season in:

1. Lighten Up Your Textiles

After months of chunky knits, velvet pillows, and heavy throws, your home is ready to exhale. The goal isn’t to make everything stark, it’s to create a feeling of freshness.

Start small:

  • Swap darker pillow covers for lighter tones or subtle patterns.

  • Trade thick blankets for breathable cotton or linen throws.

  • Wash your fall and winter covers, fold them neatly, and store them away for next season.

Textiles carry a surprising amount of visual weight. Simply changing the fabric and color palette can make a room feel instantly airier, without changing the entire look of your space or investing in big-ticket items. Think soft neutrals, gentle florals, warm whites, and natural textures.

No matter the season, a no-fail trick for styling pillows together is to start with one solid pillow (I like a 20 x 20) as your foundation, then add in a smaller pillow (try 18 x 18 or 16 x 16) in a floral pattern, and then finish it with a 12 x 20 lumbar in a stripe or geometric pattern.

2. Refresh Your Artwork for Spring & Summer

I'm always amazed at how artwork quietly sets the tone of a space. If you’re still looking at moody winter landscapes or darker abstract pieces, now is the perfect time to rotate something seasonal into the mix.

A cost-effective approach:

  • Purchase downloadable artwork from Etsy.

  • Have it printed at a local printer (many offer affordable large-format prints). I love having mine printed at CVS. There's always a sale, and you can even get photos printed on canvas. Swapping artwork seasonally is one of the easiest ways to refresh a room without rearranging furniture or repainting walls. It keeps your space feeling dynamic and aligned with what’s happening outside your windows.

  • Frame it in a piece you already own, or browse a thrift shop or antique market for something with character.

Look for:

  • Botanical illustrations

  • Light-filled landscapes

  • Soft abstract works

  • Florals or nature-inspired pieces

Also consider swapping out family photos or captured moments that align with the season. Let's face it, we all have so many pictures stored on our phones. Why not enjoy them at home?

3. Add Life to Your Space

Spring is about growth, and bringing natural elements indoors instantly shifts the energy of your home. Plants, succulents, fresh and dried floral arrangements add beauty, texture, color, and movement to a space.

You might consider:

  • A new houseplant for a sunny corner

  • A bundle of fresh stems from your local farmers' market

  • Or dried florals for something that lasts beautifully through the season

Dried arrangements add warmth and texture while still feeling organic and light,  perfect if you want something low-maintenance but impactful.

And don’t overlook what holds your greenery. The vessel matters just as much as the plant. Using handmade or thoughtfully sourced pieces adds depth and a sense of story to your space, while supporting makers and artisans in the process. It's a beautiful way to decorate intentionally while welcoming the season. Here are a few ideas to consider.

  • Vintage vases with character

  • Handmade ceramic pots

  • Handwoven baskets

  • Artisan-crafted vessels

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get started on these simple, but impactful changes that will no doubt make our home feel renewed. Here's to open windows, longer days, and the scent of freshly cut grass.
